Bike Week returns with a packed programme of events

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has unveiled its annual ‘Bike Week’ programme which takes place from June 8th – June 16th

The nine-day initiative will give local residents and visitors the chance to ‘get on their bike’ and enjoy the region’s beautiful scenery through a range of organised cycling activities.

Looking ahead to what’s on offer, the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Councillor Sean Bateson said: “Bike Week brings people together by encouraging them to get active while making a positive difference to our environment. The packed programme caters for all abilities and levels of fitness and I would encourage everyone to get involved, enjoy some fresh air and take in the sights and sounds of the Causeway Coast and Glens in this unique way.”

The programme begins with a ‘Pedalling Picnic’ on Sunday 9th June at 2.45pm. Participants can enjoy a 12 mile return cycle ride from Coleraine to Downhill Forest. Sights along the way will include the Bann Estuary and Downhill Demesne and cyclists are encouraged to bring refreshments to enjoy at the half way point at Bishop’s Gate.

A 12 mile cycle to the tranquil shores of Lough Foyle will take place on Monday 10th June at 6.45pm. The majority of this cycle from Swann’s Bridge picnic area follows quiet country roads with low average speeds, giving people the chance to enjoy the scenery.

Wednesday 12th June sees the annual Family Cycle Ride and BBQ take place at Cloonavin. Following the route of the River Bann, this 6 mile journey is perfect for families with a shorter 3 mile option also available.

An inclusive cycling session will take place at Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre in Ballymoney on Thursday 13th June and Sunday 16th June. The session will give participants a chance to enjoy a range of specialist cycling equipment available through the Disability Hub.

The final event is the Springwell Forest Family Cycle Ride on Saturday 15th June at 11am. Participants are asked to join in on the 5 mile route which is suitable for children but may be challenging for the very young as there are several hill climbs on the route.
