Lidl Northern Ireland Launches #MyLidlStory Competition

Lidl Northern Ireland today announced the launch of #MyLidlStory, a short story competition for children aged between 5 and 14 years old to encourage them to exercise their creative writing skills while learning from home over the course of the school closures.

Budding storytellers in with a chance of winning a masterclass with acclaimed author Roddy Doyle.

Entries can be made from Friday, May 15th either in store or online by tagging Lidl Northern Ireland’s Twitter(@lidl_ni)/Instagram(@lidlni) and using the #MyLidlStory hashtag or by commenting with your entry on the competition announcement post on Lidl Northern Ireland’s Facebook page. Entry forms are also available in all 39 stores across Northern Ireland.

The competition will be judged by iconic novelist and screenwriter, Roddy Doyle, and presents children with an exciting creative writing exercise. Budding authors will have 200 words or less to delve into their imaginations and construct a stupendous short story that opens with the line ‘One day in Lidl…’.

The winner in each category (5-9 years and 10-14 years) will win a £250 Lidl voucher, a creative writing masterclass hosted by Roddy Doyle and creative writing organisation, Fighting Words and a signed copy of Roddy Doyle’s book,The Rover Adventures or Wilderness.

Acclaimed author Roddy Doyle commented on the competition:

“I’m happy to be judging this competition and I’m really looking forward to reading the children’s stories. I might even rob some of their ideas!”

Seán Love, Executive Director of Fighting Words explained his involvement with the competition:

“Fighting Words provides free tutoring in creative writing for children to enable them to discover the power of their own imaginations. Right now, everyone in Northern Ireland has a story to tell, and we are delighted to work with Lidl as they provide this opportunity for children to tell theirs.”

Entries to the competition will close at midnight on Sunday 31st May 2020.
