‘Council minutes are tampered with’ – Cllr Padraig McShane

Following Causeway Coast and Glens full council meeting, Glens Independent Councillor Padraig McShane has voiced concern over the minutes of the Audit Committee meeting.

As the minutes of the committee were being ratified, Councillor McShane raised a point on their accuracy.

He said: “The minutes state that ‘Councillor P McShane requested that it was noted that he could not support the findings given that so much had happened.’

“In fact, I stated ‘For those of us that are charged with governance here, we are asked to accept the assurances of the Chief Finance Officer and this individual has already misled Council and it has highlighted that he has misled councillors and on behalf of those I represent I cannot support or accept the findings given that so much relies on that individual.’

“Now I stated quite categorically and asked for that to be noted and I was surprised, well not entirely, when I read the minutes having asked for it to be noted.”

Mayor, Councillor Richard Holmes explained that the minutes are “not a verbatim report” and that the Audit Committee had not been recorded.

Cllr McShane’s proposal to change the minutes did not carry.

Speaking after the meeting Cllr McShane said he felt the minutes had been rendered meaningless.

He said he would be speaking to the Northern Ireland Public Services Ombudsman (NIPSO) about the matter and will be making a formal complaint.
