A 20-year-old male with an Articlave address involved in a police pursuit across the Portrush and Coleraine areas in the early hours of Saturday morning has appeared in front of Coleraine Magistrates’ court this morning via video link.
Michael Higgins (20) of Quilly Road Articlave is charged with several offences including, driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle without insurance, failing to stop for police and causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving.
During the incident, a stinger was deployed, which resulted in an officer receiving serious and substantial injuries to his fingers and requiring hospitalisation.
Defence council told the court that his client wished to apologise to the officer for the injuries he sustained and ‘expressed regret’ and was ‘saddened’ by the incident. The defendant also wished his apologies to be conveyed to the officer by the court.
The court further heard the defendant made full admissions to the driving charges but had not instructed his Barrister to apply for bail.
The defendant was remanded, and the case adjourned until October 25.
