BREAKING: Judge denies bail to men charged with attempted murder

Three men have appeared at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ballymena, this morning (Friday) charged with the alleged attempted murder of a man in his thirties in Ballymoney on Sunday, January 3.

All three defendants- Brian McCook (24), Stephen McCook (28) and David Austin (54) – appeared via video link from Coleraine custody suit in front of District Judge Peter King on the charges.

Brian McCook is further charged with two additional allegations of threats to kill.

A Police officer told the court he believes he could connect the defendants to the charges and that the Police would be opposing bail citing interference with witnesses.

The court heard that the motive for the attack is believed to be a result of an alleged affair between the injured party and the defendant, Austin’s spouse, who were in a ‘sexual relationship’ together.

Denying bail, Judge King remanded the defendants in custody to appear again via video link on February 1 at Coleraine Magistrates’.

The attack in question took place along a pathway close to football pitches at the back of the towns leisure centre sometime after 7 pm, with Police receiving a report at 7:40 pm that a male was laying on the ground injured.

As a result of the attack, the victim was taken to Hospital badly beaten with head injuries.
