Staff at the court care nursing home in Ballymoney have reported that they haven’t received their wages due today (Tuesday 5); following recent news, the nursing home is to close.
Concerns were raised recently regarding the care home operating what has been described as a ‘buy to let scheme’.
An investigation by the RQIA found the home operators were selling rooms upward of £75,000 to investors.
These investors would then receive 10% of the rooms income every year for the next 25 years.
The RQIA ordered the home to close over concerns as to it’s ownership, management and financial viability.
Despite this not being illegal, North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey has raised concerns that this care home has now been forced to close not due to the care it provided but the operators putting ‘profit ahead of people’.
Fifty jobs are now likely to go as a result of this closure, with many staff that were due to be paid today not receiving the wages, leaving them behind with pay now coming up 5 to 6 weeks.
The consequences of this is despite staff not having this income they still have their own bills to pay.
