Fire destroys former Ballymoney poultry factory

NIFRS crews remain on site this morning following a fire at a former poultry factory in Ballymoney, destroying the premises.

Emergency services responded to reports of a fire at the derelict Fleming poultry factory along the Ballymena Road around 4:30 pm yesterday (Monday).

At the peak of the fire, 100 firefighters, 15 fire appliances and ten specialist appliances were in attendance fighting the blaze, which was declared a ‘major incident’.

Colleagues from the police also attended, closing the road to traffic and putting diversions in place.

Several nearby business premises were evacuated, and residents were advised to remain inside and close their windows & doors.

Aerial pictures taken yesterday evening show the extent of the blaze at the derelict premises.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Fleming poultry Ltd was at a time one of the largest employers in the town before the factories eventual closure.
