Local schools receive warning over ‘cannabis’ sweets

The Public Health Agency has issued a warning to schools after being made aware of sweet products that contain the chemical THC, an extract in the class b drug Cannabis.

These products are said to be particularly appealing to young children due to their similar appearance to normal sweet products, and maybe inadvertently consumed as such.

In the letter, PHA wrote: “The purpose of this letter is to inform you of a warning we have received from the Public Health Agency that they are aware of products that look like familiar sweet products with colourful packets, familiar cartoon images and which are appealing to children, but that in fact contain cannabis extract, or THC – the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis,”

This follows an incident in recent days, involving a young child who was admitted to hospital, in which they were suspected to have taken cannabis after finding and consuming what they believed to be harmless sweets.
