DUP Causeway Councillor John McAuley has expressed ‘shock’ and ‘concern’ at the news that the Model Care Home in Ballymoney has been given a 30-day notice to close by the Regulation Quality & Improvement Authority (RQIA).

Speaking following the revelation that the RQIA had serious concerns in relation to the registration status of The Model Care Home, Ballymoney, and an absence of assurances around its financial arrangements’, Councillor McAuley said: ‘‘This is obviously an extremely worrying development and our thoughts are with affected residents and their loved ones at this uncertain time.

First and foremost, there is a need to protect continuity of care and ensure the health and wellbeing of those affected. I know the preference of many residents and their families will be to remain at the site in circumstances where high-quality and compassionate care can continue to be provided. However, we also need to hear more from RQIA on the exact nature of the concerns identified.

“Ultimately any changes to care provided – including decisions to relocate residents – must only be taken if in the best interests of those involved. I will be making contact with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust to ensure residents and their families are consulted on an ongoing basis in the days and weeks to come.’’
