Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has called on the Education Minister to reverse a decision communicated to schools today to say that PE can no longer take place indoors and can only take place outdoors in groups less than fifteen.
Mr. McGuigan said: “I have been contacted by headteachers, teachers and parents alike today about the Minister’s decision. I really cannot see any logic to it. If thirty children can sit together in a classroom indoors then surely they can take part in PE classes outdoors in a socially distanced manner.
“We have all recognised the importance of keeping schools open for our children. An extension of this must be to allow them to take part in PE also. This is vital for their physical and mental health, especially so during this health crisis.
“I have written to the Minister to ask him to urgently review this decision.”
