Sugden welcomes new domestic violence laws

East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has said new domestic abuse laws that today (February 21) came into force will offer both protection and clearer avenues for legal redress for abuse victims.

The new coercive control laws, which are part of the Domestic Abuse and Civil Proceedings Act (Northern Ireland) 2021, mark the realisation of a process she began as justice minister.

“It is a significant day for everyone in Northern Ireland – but particularly those who have suffered, and continue to suffer, at the hands of abusers,” Ms Sugden said.

“We now have laws that reflect the reality that not all abuse is physical. Controlling, coercive behaviour can blight a person’s life just as much as physical abuse, but is often much harder to identify and prosecute.

“These laws will hopefully give victims the confidence that they can report these crimes and that all necessary action will be taken.

“Tackling domestic abuse in all its forms was a priority for me as justice minister and I’m very pleased that these changes to our laws have now taken place.”

Possible sentences for domestic abuse have been raised as part of the new laws and they make it clear that both victims and abusers can be from any identity or background.

“Domestic violence can affect anyone regardless of their gender, sexual orientation or any other identity,” Ms Sugden continued.

“It is a serious and widespread problem in Northern Ireland and requires a serious and steadfast intervention.

“These laws will hopefully mark a sea-change in attitudes and behaviours, while reassuring victims that the necessary legislation is in place to tackle incidents when they occur.”
