Support staff on National Hospitality Day

A Coleraine councillor has called on people in the borough to show support and appreciation to everyone who works in the hospitality industry, a sector which has been amongst the most ravaged by the pandemic, and help them celebrate National Hospitality Day (Saturday, September 18).

Independent Councillor William McCandless said: “National Hospitality Day is intended to be a celebration of the hotels, restaurants, bars, food service outlets and the suppliers who service them.

“It is a day for the industry to showcase themselves and for us to support them by visiting our favourite bistros, coffee houses, eateries.

“The impact of Covid-19 obviously meant that the primary focus of Government and businesses has been the safety of people. However the impact of this upon the hospitality industry has been catastrophic with hotels and restaurants being shut down and resulting in thousands of businesses and livelihoods lost.

“The perfect storm of forced closures, staffing and supply chain issues has left many hanging on by a thread and hopefully by highlighting their plight through a recognition day it will create additional footfall and engagement with the venues we enjoy.

“Whether it be the pint you enjoy in your local, the coffee and traybake, your Friday night takeaway or your hotel weekend break – we all enjoy it and appreciate that this industry is part of the fabric of our lives.

“It is estimated that £220M daily has been lost to the hospitality industry throughout the UK in the year from April 2020 to March 2021 with an approximation of over 600K job losses.

“Yet through it all many hotels throughout the UK made their venues available for NHS employees, many restaurants donated food to charities and were a lifeline of support to many who were on the breadline or fearful of leaving their homes.

“As we return to some semblance of normality, if your health permits and you feel you are able to participate, this is an opportunity for you to support the hospitality industry and show your appreciation for them.”
