“As a child, I remember occasionally returning home from school and John Hume was sitting with dad in our living room in energetic, passionate discussion. Even in those earlier days of John’s career, even as young child, I knew that I was in the presence of greatness and inspiration. However, John was also a very grounded man and had a wonderful ability to connect with people of all ages and background.

“It is so difficult to reduce John Hume’s contribution to his country to words; he literally saved it and each and every one of us owes him a debt of gratitude. He provided hope in the darkest of days. He championed social justice and unanimity. He strived for economic stability and prosperity. Hume is one of my reasons for being, and remaining, in politics. His lessons are perennial and universal.

“John will be missed by so many, above all his devoted family. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Pat and the rest of the Hume family at this heartbreaking time.”
