The PSNI have received updated advice on the wearing of PPE, where more than one occupant is in a police vehicle or in close proximity while working on police premises.
ACC Alan Todd said: “Police Service NI has always responded quickly, dynamically and effectively to address the unprecedented and unforeseen operating environment Covid-19 has created for the organisation. From the outset of the pandemic, PPE has been available to all officers and staff who required it with clear guidance on its use.
“As our understanding of the virus grows, Public Health and therefore National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) guidance has changed to adapt to the challenges faced.
“From the 10th of August the wearing of face coverings in enclosed public spaces where social distancing was not possible, was made mandatory by the Northern Ireland Assembly. NPCC has since issued further guidance for working in enclosed spaces in Police vehicles and on the Police estate. This recommends the use of fluid repellent surgical masks, therefore where more than one individual travels in a police vehicle, all occupants will now wear a fluid repellent surgical mask for the duration of the journey and risk assess the requirement for disposable gloves and eye protection. When on Police premises, where social distancing is not possible and physical measures such as screens and enhanced ventilation do not mitigate the risks, all officers and staff must wear a fluid repellent surgical mask in the presence of colleagues or the members of the public. This guidance has been adapted for the protection of both officers and members of the public and are intended to reduce the risk of asymptomatic transmission of the virus.”
