The Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) will now publish weekly statistics that will include suspected and confirmed COVID-19 related deaths across both hospital and community settings.
As of the week ending April 10th, the PHA figures as published in their daily surveillance report of COVID-19 related deaths was 118. These figures take into account only the deaths reported to the PHA where a positive test occurred, and the patient died within 28 day whether or not COVID-19 was the cause of death. PHA figures may not capture all deaths that occur outside hospital.
Whereas these new corresponding NISRA figures, using a different method of reporting than the PHA, for the same period of COVID-19 related deaths, where the deaths had been fully registered was 141.
That figure increases to 157 (provisional and subject to change) when deaths related to COVID-19 occurred up to week ending April 10th (date of death), but also included those registered up to April 15th. This is a third higher than what was being reported by PHA, and increase of 39.
These figures will now be broken-down into Hospital, community and residential setting.
As of week ending April 10th, 109 deaths had occurred in hospitals (69%), 41 in care homes/hospice settings (26%), and remainder 7 in a residential setting.
Of the deaths that did occur outside of a hospital in a community care setting, these occurred in 23 separate establishments across Northern Ireland.
