DUP North Antrim MLA and Policing Board Group Leader Mervyn Storey has acknowledged a statement by Sinn Fein’s Gerry Kelly committing to the rule of law but stressed that the public will ultimately judge him on his actions, not words.
Mr Storey said: “The public will note this this statement by Gerry Kelly which comes in response to public outrage at his glorification of the Maze escape and hot on the heels of formal proceedings being launched to investigate his conduct.
“Many will understandably question the sincerity of his words. They show no remorse for the hurt or trauma he has caused to victims of the IRA. There is no recognition of damage to public confidence by his actions or indeed the mixed messages sent to young republicans looking at dissident groups.
Whether it be using bolt cutters, ignoring Covid-19 rules or glorifying the Maze prison escape Gerry Kelly’s behaviour cannot go unchecked. All current investigations must continue, and due process should be followed.
Whether it be Gerry Kelly, Martina Anderson or Michelle O’Neill this culture must change and it remains the case that actions speak louder than words.”
