Ballymoney-born lawn bowls player Gary Kelly has secured the 17th medal for Northern Ireland at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Now living in Australia, former Ballymoney resident Gary joined Team NI for this year‘s Commonwealth Games, competing in the men’s singles lawn bowl tournament.

Taking a 21-15 win in the semi-finals against Malaysia, Gary advanced to the final in an ironic twist against his now fellow countryman, Australia’s Aaron Wilson.

Unfortunately, after a 21-3 defeat by his opponent, Gary had to settle for silver taking Northern Ireland’s medal haul to 17.

Scotland’s Iain McLean took bronze.
