Former Dalriada pupil received BEM in New Year Honours

A former Dalriada School & Ballymoney hockey player, including Northern Ireland woman’s football goalie, has been awarded a BEM in the New Year Honours.

Angela Platt has been recognised for her role in local sport as a former Ireland Hockey player (2000-06).

Originally from Coleraine, Ms Platt started her junior hockey career at Dalriada School in the 1990’s, before moving to a senior level playing for various teams as goalkeeper, including Ballymoney up to 2007.

It was at Ballymoney during the 2000/01 season the team won the Irish Senior cup. She returned briefly in 2011 for the team, playing in the Ulster Premier League.

Her final profession hockey appearance was in 2016 for the Ulster Elks, however she has also been in involved in women’s football during her hockey career, including Ballymoney United, Crusaders Newtownabbey Strikers and for the Northern Ireland team.

Angela now works in sports administration, encouraging and promoting sports.

Angela received a BEM ‘For services to Sports Development in Northern Ireland’.

The 148th Open Golf tournament held during the summer this year at Royal Portrush, leaves it’s legacy in the honours list.

Wilma Erskin was the club’s Secretary at the time and had over 30 years in the golf clubs management, and instrumental part in bring and promoting this year’s prestigious golf tournament.

She received a OBE ‘For services to Tourism and Golf in Northern Ireland’.
