Furloughed workers financial support scheme extended to October

The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has told the House of Commons this afternoon that the support scheme for furloughed workers will be extended until October.

Speaking to the Commons the Chancellor said: “We believe in the dignity of work and we are doing everything we can to protect people currently unable to work.”

Furloughed workers will continue to receive 80% of their wage up to £2,500 a month as part of the job retention scheme. It had been thought that the rate would drop from 80% to 60%, but will remain at the current level.

However Mr Sunak did however indicate that some changes would come into effect from the end of July and that the burden of paying these wages at 80% would be shared between both the government and employers.
