The Macmillan Move More group in the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council area raised over £2000 during this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
With traditional events for the charity’s annual fundraiser affected by COVID restrictions, the Mayor, Alderman Mark Fielding, and Move More Co-Ordinator, Catherine King, encouraged people to ‘Move 5K On The Day’, share their selfies and make an online donation instead.
The Macmillan Move More programme is available in every local Council area and helps people living with cancer to get active and stay active. Collectively Move Groups helped to raise £10,000 during their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events.
Alderman Fielding said: “Like many other charities, Macmillan’s fundraising opportunities have been greatly curtailed this year, so I’m glad to say that locally we have been able to make a positive difference by raising a total of £2220 within Causeway Coast and Glens.
“I would like to thank everyone who got behind this event as all the money raised will help to ensure that Macmillan can continue to provide its vital cancer support services.”
Catherine added, “We would usually be busy thinking about ways to bring people together with friends and family members to enjoy the social benefits of coffee and a chat, but of course this year was very different. However, we wanted to do as much as we could to raise money, with Covid restrictions in place.
“To say that I was astonished by the amount raised would be an under-statement. We can’t thank people in Causeway Coast and Glens enough for their generosity.
“In my role as Move More Coordinator, I support people living with cancer every day and know only too well the impact that a cancer diagnosis can have on people’s lives. People’s anxieties and concerns have increased during the pandemic – we know that our fundraising will support Macmillan to provide the vital help that people living with cancer rely on.”
Physical activity is safe during and after most types of cancer treatment and can help to reduce the side effects of treatment, prevent the occurrence of other long-term conditions, and reduce the risk of cancer spreading or returning.
