Queens Birthday Honours recognises 119 N.I. individuals.

The Queens Birthday Honours recipients have been published, with 119 individuals from Northern Ireland listed as being awarded an honour for 2020.

Given the year so far that was, it isn’t surprising that the majority of recipients of honour throughout the UK (72%) come from their local community, reflective of individuals with the ongoing efforts and response against COVID-19.

The most notable recipient for his part in the COVID-19 response is Captain Sir Tom Moore (100) who wanted to raise £1,000 for the NHS by his 100th birthday BUT in the 24-day period which saw the war veteran walk around his garden – he surpassed his goal and raised over £30m – with the eventual total reaching £32.7m

Captain Sir Tom Moore has already received his knighthood in a special ceremony at Winsor Palace on July 17, invested by the Queen.

In entertainment everyones favourite queen of baking, Mary Berry, received a damehood as did actress Maureen Lipman who started and popular Actor David Suchet was given a knighthood.

Lorraine Kelly who has been a regular on morning TV for over 35 year’s will receive a CBE with former TV favourite Mr Motivatore, real name Derrick Evans, receiving an MBE for his effort in keeping the public fit during COVID-19.

Locally

Closer to home, Mr David Sterling the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service has been recognised for services to Government in Northern Ireland and awarded a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) whilst PSNI Chief Superintendent Dr Simon Walls has received the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM).

In sport Motorcycle Road Racer Ryan Farquhar get a BEM for services to Motorcycle Racing as does race Secretary of the Cookstown and District Morircycle club.

Mrs Lorraine Abernethy from Coleraine is awarded a MBE for services to Paediatric Occupational Therapy and the COVID-19 response, one of many NHS workers recognised.
