97 Individuals throughout Northern Ireland have received an award inthe 2020 New Years Honours – and we have the FULL list.

This years New Year Honours list see’s a total of 1.097 people throughout the UK receive an award with 941 of those selected to recieve either an OBE, MBE or BEM.

The Singer-songwriter and activist Sir Elton John and historian Sir Keith Thomas both become Companions of Honour, while there are damehoods for entertainer and charitable fundraiser Olivia Newton-John and broadcaster and campaigner Baroness Floella Benjamin. There is a knighthood for film and theatre director Sam Mendes, who has directed two James Bond films

On this side of the water, Bangor Man and Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody, has received an OBE for services to Music and charity in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately the the award was overshadowed with the tragic news that his father, Jack Lightbody, has sadly passed away from Dementia.

The Open Golf, held at Royal Portrush during the summer, has left it’s legacy, with Ms Wilma Erskine-Heggarty receiving an OBE for services to Tourism and Golf in Northern Ireland. This will be Ms Erskine-Heggarty second New Year Honour, having previously been awarded an BEM in 2015, and was the Club Secretary at Royal Portrush during the Open Golf tournament.

Robert Thompson was honoured with a BEM award ‘for services to Commemoration and Remembrance in Northern Ireland’, including his fundraising and erecting of the statue in memory of War Hero Robert Quigg VC, in his hometown of Bushmills.
