Buckingham Palace has announced that HM The Queen has died after earlier being placed ‘under medical supervision’.
The 96-year-old monarch, who had been staying at her Scottish reticence Balmoral, passed away surrounded by members of the Royal family.
Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne following her father’s death – King George VI – in 1952 at 25, celebrating Her Platinum Jubilee this year.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Plans will now be put in place ahead of a period of national mourning and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, including the ascension of Prince Charles as the new King.
