Big screen in Coleraine for Coronation

Plans are progressing for the provision of a big screen in Coleraine to allow locals to watch the coronation of King Charles III.

At a meeting of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Corporate Policy and Resources Committee on Tuesday, March 28, director of corporate services Moira Quinn confirmed that the council has registered an interest in obtaining funding for the screen with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Councils can register for a grant of £35,000 to screen the coronation on Saturday, May 6 and the coronation concert on Sunday, May 7.

The estimated cost of a large screen for Coleraine Town Centre is £10,000.

As such, the Coronation Sub-Committee had considered setting aside some of the £35,000 as additional Small Grants Funding. However it has subsequently been confirmed that the funding is only to be used for the coronation.

It comes after four groups had funding applications to the council’s Community Festivals Fund (CFF) approved for coronation events.

At a meeting on Tuesday, March 21, the council’s Leisure and Development Committee approved funding awards for a total of 45 out of 46 projects, as recommended by the fund’s assessment panel.

The four groups applying for funding for coronation events were Ballywatt Presbyterian Women Crafters for a “Coronation Celebration Festival”, Friends Of Harpurs Hill Primary School for “Coronation Street”, the Macosquin Village Community Association for a “King’s Coronation Festival” and the North Irish Horse Historical And Cultural Association for “King Charles’ Coronation/Festival of Monarchs through the Ages”.

Each funding award is worth £750.

The CFF was established by the Department for Communities (DfC), with the council receiving an annual contribution from the DfC which it is required to match. This year the total funding requirement is £62,650 and the council is to provide £34,050.
