Speaking after a public meeting in Balnamore Primary School on Monday 5th February, North Antrim MLA, Sian Mulholland, expressed her support for the campaign group who are attempting to convince the Department of Education to overturn the proposal from the Education Authority to close the school at the end of this academic year.

‘Balnamore Primary School has been an integral part of this rural community for many years, providing quality education and nurturing the growth of children in the village and beyond. However, over the last number of years, the school has faced a period of turbulence stemming from a series of leadership changes, issues and subsequent insufficient support from the Education Authority. These issues have been beyond the control of the school community and have had a detrimental impact on the school’s overall numbers and therefore its stability. I call on the newly appointed Minister of Education to use his discretion and pause this process to allow the school the time and space to stabilise and regrow.’

Local Ballymoney Alliance Cllr Kane has been supporting the campaign group in their efforts to retain the facility in the village saying ‘It is clear that the school has the potential to be a thriving academic hub for the children of the village. The passion and focus of the Board of Governors and the campaign group illustrates the commitment to the retention and rebuilding of the school community. The threat of closure has been hovering over the school for the past few years so what is now needed is for the Minister to step in to afford this community the opportunity to strengthen and grow the intake in a supported and valued environment. ‘
Both representatives would encourage anyone who would like to get involved in the campaign to get in touch with the Balnamore Primary School Board of Governors and help retain this vital asset.
