JUST IN: Police appeal for further information after a man is granted police bail over 2018 death

Police have appealed for information following the arrest and subsequent bailed by police, pending further enquires, of a 58 year old this evening.


This is in relation to the death of 54 year old, who has been named as Kieran Doherty in April 2018 from injuries sustained after a previously assault at a bar in Coleraine the previous year in May 2017.

The PSNI released the following statement this evening:

“The 58 year old man arrested today by detectives from Major Investigations Team investigating the death of a 54 year old man in April 2018 following a serious assult in Captain’s Bar on Lower Captains Street Coleraine in May 2017, has been released on Police bail pending further enquires.

“Kieran Doherty was assaulted in the toilet area of the bar and was discovered unconscious in the evening of May 25, 2017. Sadly, he later died of his injuries in hospital on April 28, 2018. Kieran is missed dearly by his family and friends.

“Detective Inspector Claire McGarvey, who is appealing for information, said: “The murder investigation is progressing and I would like to hear from anyone with any information regarding the attack. Did you witness Kieran being assaulted or in an altercation with anyone in the bar? I would also like to hear from anyone who has information even if you weren’t in the bar at the time. 

“This original assault, which was reported to police on June 10, 2017, was subject of an investigation and since he died we have been treating it as a murder investigation. We have gathered witness evidence and conducted a number of interviews but would appeal to anyone with information to please bring it forward to police.”
