A 23-year-old man appeared in court this morning via video link charged with several offences relating to an incident in Coleraine yesterday involving what seemed to be a ‘machete’.

At Ballymena Magistrates’ Court, Corrie Gordon (23) of Cappagh Avenue Portstewart, Is charged with offences including three counts of common assault, making threats to kill and possessing an article with a blade or point in a public place.

He is also further charged with possessing class A and class C drugs.

On Wednesday, June 14, videos circulated online show an individual dressed in black with his face covered in the Bushmills Road/Railway Road area of Coleraine brandishing what onlookers described as a machete-type object.

Before the attendance by the PSNI, the defendant was captured and held on the ground by a member of the public until the police arrived.

At Ballymena Magistrates’ Court today, the Defendant’s application for Court Bail was denied due to the following grounds:

  • There is a possibility that the Defendant may commit additional offences.
  • The Defendant is unlikely to adhere to the bail conditions.

The case has been postponed until July 10, at which point it will be heard at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court.

Until then, the Defendant will remain in custody and will be remanded to Prison at Maghaberry.
